Gastric Balloon

Gastric Balloon

A weight loss procedure that occupies 60% of the stomach’s volume, thereby reducing the amount of food the patient can consume. There are four types:

  1.  Smart Capsule.
  2.  Six-Month Balloon (endoscopic).
  3. One-Year Balloon (endoscopic).
  4.  Adjustable One-Year Balloon (endoscopic).

These four types vary in their insertion methods and duration:

– The Smart Capsule is swallowed naturally without any procedure. It dissolves automatically and exits with waste after its duration ends.

– The other three types require endoscopic insertion and removal.

Duration:

– The Smart Capsule remains in the stomach for about 4-5 months.

– The Six-Month Balloon is removed after six months.

– The One-Year Balloon follows the same pattern.

– All types occupy 60% of the stomach, equivalent to 550 ml, except the Adjustable One-Year Balloon, which can be increased by 50 ml increments as needed.

Post-Procedure Diet:

– Patients must follow a liquid diet for 4-7 days post-procedure to ease the stomach’s burden and reduce intolerance symptoms.
Afterwards, the patient gradually transitions to a regular diet.

Possible Symptoms:

– Patients may experience pain and nausea after the procedure, which are normal and temporary. Pain relievers are provided to manage these symptoms.

Weight Loss Expectations:

– The expected weight loss varies among patients based on their adherence. The balloon limits food intake, but success depends on maintaining a low-calorie diet and increasing physical activity.

Imagine the gastric balloon as a helpful assistant in your stomach, gently reminding you to eat less. However, just like having a helpful friend on a diet, it works best when you make healthy food choices and stay active.
