What is Gastroscopy
Gastroscopy is a procedure used to visually examine and view the upper digestive tract with a small camera at the end of a long, flexible tube inserted through the mouth and pharynx.
A gastroenterologist uses endoscopy to diagnose and sometimes treat diseases affecting the esophagus, stomach, and the beginning of the small intestine (duodenum).
Gastroscopy takes ten minutes and the patient is given a sedative injection
Reasons for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy:
Stomach pain.
Heartburn.
Indigestion.
Difficulty swallowing.
Chronic nausea and vomiting.
Significant weight loss without dieting.
Follow-up on the stability of cases that have undergone abdominal surgery.
Some cases of anemia if the doctor suspects that the cause of the lack of red blood cells is internal bleeding.
Severe bleeding that appears in the form of severe stomach pain, accompanied by vomiting blood, and a change in the color of the stool to a dark color.
Use of therapeutic gastroscopy
Gastroscopy can also be performed to treat some cases, including:
Treatment of stomach and esophageal bleeding.
Dilating the esophagus that may result from previous tumors or exposure to radiation therapy to treat cases of swallowing difficulties.
Removing cancerous tumors or polyps.
Removing foreign objects that a person may accidentally swallow, especially children.
Providing nutrition to some patients, as the endoscope helps guide the stomach tube, in the event of inability to eat in the normal way.
